Abstract

This research aims to describe the teacher's strategies in developing students' speaking skills in English subjects at the vocational high school level. The research focus is directed toward the teacher's efforts in designing, implementing, and evaluating effective speaking learning activities, particularly through the application of interactive learning strategies. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, while the research subject involved one English teacher. Data were collected through non-participatory observation, field notes, and documentation. The findings reveal a significant difference between students' conditions during monotonous learning and when interactive strategies were applied. In the non-participatory observation, learning tended to be one-way, leading to low student interest, lack of confidence, and a tendency to engage in other activities such as playing handphone's or working on assignment from other subjects. However, in the participatory observation, when the researcher collaborated with the teacher to conduct interactive activities such as presentations and role plays, students were more engaged, showed greater confidence, and began speaking in English, even if only in short phrases. Improvements were also observed in confidence, fluency, sentence structure, and pronunciation. These findings highlight that varied and interactive teaching strategies can significantly enhance students' speaking skills and foster their learning motivation. Moreover, the study emphasizes the importance of the teacher's role in creating an enjoyable classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing themselves. Therefore, interactive learning strategies are recommended as an alternative that can be more widely implemented in English classes. This study is also expected to serve as a reference for teachers in developing creative teaching materials and to encourage further research on the effectiveness of interactive strategies in language learning across various educational contexts.
